This exhibition highlights the strengths of MCASD’s permanent collection, while also outlining the breadth of its holdings. Beginning with the Museum’s early commitment to Minimalist and Pop Art, Holdings surveys the historical scope of the Museum’s focus, from the 1960s to today. MCASD is especially dedicated to collecting works from Southern California, with deep holdings of the artists who established the West Coast art scene as well as artists working in the region today.

The permanent collection also evidences MCASD’s attention to the constantly changing landscape of contemporary art. Recent acquisitions reflect the Museum’s dedication to living artists, and a lasting interest in collecting artists early in their career. Works from the recent past often reflect back to historical works in the collection. These works demonstrate how ideas develop over time, as conversations among peers and artists of different generations. Over the decades, the Museum has built upon and expanded its holdings to represent the diverse field of contemporary art.

Holdings: Selections from MCASD’s Collection is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and is made possible by generous lead underwriting support from The Cochrane Exhibition Fund. Additional funding has been provided by Fenner Milton. Institutional support of MCASD is provided by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Fund.
